U.S. Marines from Marine Aviation Training Support Squadron One on board Naval Air Station Meridian kicked off their local Toys for Tots annual campaign on Thursday at the Geoffrey’s store, next to Bonita Lakes Mall in Meridian. The primary goal of the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program is to deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. "This is one of those projects that really makes us feel good about who we are and what we  can do to help those less fortunate," said Marine Sgt. Antonio Ferguson, coordinator for the  Toys for Tots campaign at NAS Meridian. In it’s fifth year to be one of the national sponsors for the Toys for Tots drive,  Geoffrey’s toy chain is again honored to join with the U.S. Marine Corps in their efforts to  provide for needy children during the Christmas Holiday. "We are simply very proud to be included in this drive," said Nathan Ezzell, a supervisor for the  Meridian location. Toy donation boxes for new, unwrapped toys are now set up in Meridian at Geoffrey’s,  both Wal-Mart locations, Sam’s Club, Big Lots, Meridian Yamaha and both Community Bank locations. Boxes are also  at Pearl River Resort in Philadelphia and Extreme Wireless in Newton. Through the generosity of the local community, Marines collected nearly 7,000 new  toys last year and hope to exceed that number this year. Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, and a group of Marine Reservists in  Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. In 1948, Walt Disney designed the Toys for Tots logo, which is still used today. Disney also designed the first Toys for Tots poster used to promote the nationwide program. Over the 60 years of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, Marines have distributed  more than 351 million toys for 166 million needy children. U.S. Marines will be present at both Meridian Wal-Mart locations, Geoffrey’s, Sam’s Club and Big Lots on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. until Dec. 10 to assist those who wish to donate. The toys will then be distributed to The Wesley  House Community Center and the Salvation Army in Meridian. Also joining this year’s drive are members of several local motorcycle clubs. They will coordinate their  toy gathering efforts with the U.S. Marines in trying to ensure as many children have a happy and merry Christmas this year.
